Béla Fleck & The Flecktones combine Country, Jazz & Classical styles to perform Classical Modern Composer Aaron Copland's "Billy the Kid and Rodeo Suite" composition "Hoedown", featuring Fleck on banjo, joined by his Jazz ensemble, &, on other of the album's tracks like the impressive "Zona Mona", additional musical resources including polyphonic harmonic overtonal Tuvan Throat Singing, Indian Tabla Talking & Talking Tabla, Sitar-Banjo & Trinidad Steel Drum." ( — Cliff Thompson, VSJSK Music Circle); "Premiere banjo player Béla Fleck is considered one of the most innovative pickers in the world and has done much to demonstrate the versatility of his instrument, which he uses to play everything from traditional bluegrass to progressive jazz." ( — Sandra Brennan, All Music Guide); "...Outbound...features...Fleck on a "sitar banjo," an electrified instrument with a banjo head and a sitar bridge. Comments: "...smooth jazz's premier ensemble...inspired by leader Russ Freeman's...amazing talents for jazz and flamenco guitar playing, in addition to his trademark classical guitar-influenced pop/rock sound. The collection is also a celebration of ...the Rippingtons' instrumental role in creating music that helps define the genre's sound. The band weaves through the title track with a soaring, echoing guitar melody over a cool, shuffling hip-hop groove. Mark Williamson's spiritual-flavored chanting enhances the moody textures and funky, retro-soul vibe of the electric guitar-driven "Deep Powder," while the steamy, classical guitar-led "Seven Nights in Rome" finds the band looking down from the mountaintop, thoughtfully recounting the romantic ambience of...Italy. "North Peak"'s slamming percussion approximates a speedy downhill race, but all that chill is more than balanced by the daring and exotic "Angelfire," which blends Freeman's colorful flamenco stylings and Arturo Sandoval's crackling trumpet." — Jonathan Widran, All Music Guide |

Comments: "Vast China's arising impact on the emerging global economy is heralded by its newest ambassadors of culture, the Twelve Girls Band, who arrived on our Western shores with a splash last month, in San Francisco on TV News spots, giant ads on the sides of AC Transit busses, and a live performance at Bimbo's 365 Club. Formed by father of Chinese rock music Xiaojing Wang, the Girls are all conservatory trained musicians playing on classical Chinese instruments including the ancient zither "gu zheng" , four-stringed lute "pipa", hammered dulcimer "yang qin", two stringed Chinese fiddle "erhu" and bamboo flute "dizi"; the CD includes a DVD of earlier performances ( — Cliff Thompson, VSJSK Music Circle); "...they are enchanting, but Twelve Girls Band excel when it comes to excitement... these women are obvious lovers of Western pop; it comes through in their enthusiasm. A Western-based orchestra backs their 12 traditional instruments" (— David Jeffries, All Music Guide) |

Comments: "India's master classical musicians, as hosted by the Ravi Shankar Music Circle, include violinist L. Subramaniam, whose compositions often utilize non-standard time signatures, as on this month's track selection." (Cliff Thompson VSJ Music Circle); "...Since 1973, Subramaniam has made historic collaborations and recordings with people like Stephane Grapelli, Yehudi Menuhin, Herbie Hancock, Jean-Pierre Rampal, Joe Sample, Stanley Clarke, George Duke, Larry Corryel, Tony Williams, and Maynard Ferguson." (-- Indian Violin); "...some of the most imaginatively conceived brilliantly performed pieces ever to fall under the heading of “fusion”...vividly blends South Indian and European classical musics with contemporary jazz, world, folk forms, and progressive rock. Drawing from a starry supporting cast featuring flutists Hubert Laws and Bud Shank, trumpeter Maynard Ferguson, guitarists Larry Coryell and Jorge Strunz, bassist Stanley Clarke and drummer Tony Williams, Subramaniam (who’s also heard on viola, violin synthesizer, and a mini-harp known as the svarmandal) and company are dazzling throughout." (-- Fantasy Jazz, Inc.); "The CD reissue of the two albums Indian-born electric violinist L. Subramaniam first released in 1984 and 1986, Indian Express/Mani & Co... / ...finds him not only playing violin but the brand-new violin synthesizer, viola and a mini-harp called the svarmandal. With the strong influence of Indian classical music, folk songs and fusion, L. Subramaniam welcomes such top open-minded musicians as guitarist Jorge Strunz, bassist Stanley Clarke, drummer Stix Hooper, keyboardist John Beasley and flutist Hubert Laws (who doubles on piccolo) to a consistently surprising and generally stimulating session of atmospheric and sometimes haunting music." Comments: VSJ Music Circle celebrates it's 2nd anniversary this month, and just for fun recommends "something completely different", the rare and only known release of "The Zodiac: Cosmic Sounds". The work sets to music the personality types associated with astrology (arguably similar to the more scientifically plausible psychological Jungian Archetypes), with spoken lyrics reminiscent of Sufi love poetry. As various reviews note, "...it was the dawning of the Age of Aquarius, and anything was possible. The year was 1967, the Summer of Love...[Zodiac is a]...masterpiece of psychedelic mood-music...classic super psychedelia at its best". As noted in the liner notes, "...The Zodiac: Cosmic Sounds...was a collectively-hatched concept album, matching psychedelic mood music with spoken prose and all manner of exotic and electronic instrumentation. It was...'celestial counterpoint with words and music'...And as the back sleeve instructed...it 'MUST BE PLAYED IN THE DARK'...it appeared just as both psychedelic rock and astrology itself were coming into vogue in the youthful counterculture...it was futuristic, embellished by some of the first Moog synthesizer ever heard on a commercial recording, an assortment of exotic percussive instruments, and sitar...further decorated by haunting harpsichord and organ, along with...mid-1960s Los Angeles rock guitar licks...the album featured some of the creme de la creme of the Los Angeles session musician clique...Zodiac...was...instigated by Elektra founder and president Jac Holzman...Producing the album was Alex Hassilev, one-third of the Limeliters...with Mort Garson...to do most of the arranging...Juilliard-educated Garson...assembled...musicians, including Paul Beaver [who]...had a warehouse...filled...with...arcane instruments, theremins, and strange beasts that he created himself...and Emil Richards...Percussionist Richards boasted...a collection of over 700 percussion instruments...[Paul was]...the first guy to use the Moog...he introduced the synthesizer to the West Coast...the Moog...was the only existing one in town at that time...the assortment of percussive and electronic instruments was pretty advanced for its time...the water chime...has a doppler effect...a set of metal plates...four brass discs...dropped...into a trough of water...that microtonally bends the pitch downward...The bamboo instruments...were 'angklungs', bamboo rattles from Southeast Asia...It was the Moog that supplied the freakiest swoops and textures...The Moog...had very unstable oscillators...you had to warm up the machine. It took time for everything to stabilize. And then it wouldn't necessarily stay in frequency, which meant the tuning would go out...later...they were able to stabilize the output of the oscillators...". (-- Liner Notes For The Zodiac: Cosmic Sounds). Break out your Lava Lamps, turn out the lights & enjoy a set of refreshingly original musical arrangements and compositions still as unique today as in 1967. |

Comments: Villa St. Jean House Band "The Sufferin Kind" Lead Guitarist Henry Rowland offers this month's recommendation, the work of Fusion Jazz -Rocker Jeff Beck, among whose discography is the consistently top-rated album "Blow by Blow", produced by famed Beatles' producer Sir George Martin, & containing the popular track "Freeway Jam". "...Blow by Blow features a tremendous supporting cast. Middleton's tasteful use of the Fender Rhodes, clavinet, and analog synthesizers...Drummer Richard Bailey...deftly combines elements of jazz and funk with contemporary mixed meters...George Martin's ingenious production and string arrangements rival his greatest work...One of the album's unique qualities is the sense of fun that permeates the performances...'Freeway Jam' best exemplifies the album's loose and fun-loving qualities, with Beck again riding high atop the rhythm section's wave...Blow by Blow ranks as one of the premiere recordings in the canon of instrumental rock music." — Mark Kirschenmann, All Music Guide |

After a seven-year and 4000 million kilometre journey, the music will reach Titan on 14 January 2005. This will be the furthest distance at which human-made sounds will have landed on another celestial body...The four songs, namely ‘Hot time’, ‘Bald James Dean’, ‘Lalala’ and ‘No love’ were recorded in 1997 at the Sony Studios in New York City under the direction of producer Kirk Yano. The recorded versions on board the spacecraft last for 12 minutes...The purpose of putting music on the spacecraft is to strengthen the knowledge of ESA’s Huygens mission to Titan, by aiming 'to leave a trace of our humanity in the unknown and to build awareness about this adventure, especially among young people...', said Huygens project scientist Jean-Pierre Lebreton....Musician Julien Civange, of the Siliwood-Music2Titan project, said: 'Music2Titan reflects our will to embellish Earth and space with unconventional artistic projects'...The Cassini-Huygens mission is a co-operation between NASA, ESA and ASI, the Italian space agency." (-- ESA News); "...The four pieces of music each correspond to a stage of the mission...Lalala...corresponds to before the beginning of the mission...Bald James Dean...evoking the separation of the space probes Cassini and Huygens...Hot Time...more space-like...No Love...corresponds to the end of the mission, a calm after so many years of work..."
